Tailored Surfaces

Welcome to the IOM

The Leibniz Institute for Surface Modification (IOM) conducts research into the fundamental physical and chemical processes that enable important contributions to surface technologies using ions, electrons, plasmas, and photons. The goal is to develop new functional and precise surfaces for cutting-edge applications. Our scope of work includes elucidating fundamental phenomena to generate new insights and innovations, and transferring scientific results into industrial applications.

From ion technologies to biocompatibility—an overview of our research!

At the IOM, we conduct research on functional surfaces, materials, and process technologies—ranging from ion-based processes to biocompatible applications. Our interdisciplinary research combines scientific excellence with technological relevance.

About Research

IOM Mission

By combining our expertise in the natural sciences and engineering, we research, develop, and apply beam-based methods for the fabrication and processing of surfaces and materials using ions, electrons, photons, and plasmas. Our scientific discoveries serve the public interest and benefit society in forward-looking fields of application such as optics, the semiconductor industry, the energy sector, biomedicine, and water management. In this way, the IOM contributes to Europe’s technological sovereignty and sustainable development.

IOM Vision

The IOM is the Leibniz Center of Excellence for the design, production, and modification of innovative surfaces and materials used in socially relevant fields of the future. By following the innovation chain from idea to application, the IOM sees itself as a comprehensive strategic partner for research and industry.
